2. Telling Time in Bengali
2.1 How to Ask for and Tell the Time
If asking for the time, use:
কত বাজে? (Koto Baje?) – What time is it?
To express the hour, use the structure:
- [Number] + টা (ta) + বাজে (baje)।
For example:
একটা বাজে। (Ekta Baje.) – It is 1 o’clock.
দুইটা বাজে। (Duita Baje.) – It is 2 o’clock.
পাঁচটা বাজে। (Pachta Baje.) – It is 5 o’clock.
2.2 Saying "Half Past," "Quarter Past," and "Quarter To"
In Bengali, specific words are used for half past, quarter past, and quarter to:
Half past (সাড়ে – Sare): Add “সাড়ে” before the number.
Quarter past (সওয়া – Sowa): Add “সওয়া” before the number.
Quarter to (পৌনে – Poune): Use “পৌনে” before the next hour.
Examples:
সাড়ে তিনটা (Sare Tin-ta) – It is half past three (3:30).
সওয়া সাতটা (Sowa Sat-ta) – It is quarter past seven (7:15).
পৌনে আটটা (Poune Aat-ta) – It is quarter to eight (7:45).
2.3 Saying the Exact Time
When expressing an exact time with minutes, the structure is:
[Hour] + টা (ta) + [Minute] + মিনিট (Minute)
Examples:
দুইটা সাতাশ মিনিট (Duita Shatash Minute) – It is 2:27.
পাঁচটা বাহান্ন মিনিট (Pach-ta Baananno Minute) – It is 5:52.
